Another addition to my list of must-see new NYC stores!
FIT Alum Philip Salem recently opened OWEN, an upscale boutique in the Meatpacking District, offering an eclectic collection of brands including Surface to Air, Kaelen, Patrik Ervell and Dannijo.
The store’s interior design is crafty yet bare-bones, with 25,000 paper lunch bags lining gritty, brick walls. I’d love to see this idea piggybacked for other retailers, for example, using iconic bags like Bloomingdale’s “Little Brown Bag” or Hermes’ tall, bright orange bag.
The store interior is the brainchild of Tacklebox. The Brooklyn-based design firm has previously worked on stores for Aesop and 3.1 Philip Lim.
Anthro… always inspirational

I got my Memorial Day Weekend out of the way last weekend with a much-needed trip to Sonoma’s Scribe Winery. Before getting boozy on tannins and frolicking in decrepit haciendas, we filled our bellies with delicious diner fare at the Fremont Diner. Popular with passers-through and locals alike, the Diner is a dusty, side-of-the-road throwback with a mid-century California-feel, a place where Dean Moriarty’s would perhaps stop for a salted caramel milkshake, if salted caramel milkshakes existed back then.
The restaurant offers gluttonous barbecue sandwiches, home-style desserts and other fried deliciousness, but what I really loved was the adorable general store. Stocked with novelty candies (like gummy fried eggs), branded t-shirts, veggie seeds and gag gifts, the shop is merchandised with old signs, green mason jars and hand-written hang-tags.
Today, vintage-inspired ecommerce site Modcloth debuts its first private collection, making great strides towards fashion democracy. Completely crowd-sourced, the collection was designed and voted on by Modcloth fans on Facebook. The adorable and affordable 10-piece range is available on Modcloth.com starting today, just in time for summer wedding season.
